Authority required (STREAMLINED) items in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) 012-63020040

If the Streamlined Authority request is for a:

• mailed or HPOS Authority application, go to Step 2
• telephone request, go to Step 5

If the approved prescriber has sent a request for a Streamlined Authority required item, for listed quantities and/or repeats:

• key the authority request in OPA, OPA will assess as Authority not required
• key an authority comment ‘S/L item for listed Q+R’
• generate a letter, use the Streamline Authority reason:
• Z3035 PBS General letter for processing general authorities, or
• Z2719 PBS Complex letter for processing complex authorities
• save a copy of the letter as a PDF in the Customer Information folder

If the approved prescriber has put the Streamlined Authority code on the proposed prescription/prescriptions for the list quantity and repeats (or less), but has inadvertently sent the prescription to Services Australia:

• the proposed prescription/prescriptions does not require prior approval
• go to Step 3

Check the Streamlined Authority code recorded on the prescription is valid in NDRD.

Is the Streamlined Authority code correct?

• Yes:
• key the Authority request in OPA, OPA assesses as Authority not required
• generate a letter, use the Streamline Authority reason:
  Z3035 PBS General letter for processing general authorities, or
  Z2719 PBS Complex letter for processing complex authorities
• No:
• key the Authority request in OPA, OPA assesses as Authority not required
• key an authority comment - S/L item for listed Q+R incorrect S/L code sent by prescriber
• generate a letter, use the Streamline Authority reason
  Z3035 PBS General letter for processing general authorities, or
  Z2719 PBS Complex letter for processing complex authorities
• select the incorrect code check box

Go to Step 4.

Attach the letter to the work item, see Table 4 in Processing new Authority requests in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

For:

• mailed prescriptions, post the prepared letter to the prescriber
• HPOS Form Upload authorities, attach the prepared letter and respond to the original request in HPOS with 'Please read the attached letter for the outcome of your recent PBS authority approval application'

If a prescriber contacts Services Australia requesting a Streamlined Authority code for a particular item, Service Officers can:

• help the prescriber to locate the Streamlined code in pbs.gov.au, see Resources for link, and
• provide the prescriber with the Streamlined code

Note: the prescriber is responsible for providing the Streamlined code that meets the restriction criteria for the patient.
