Example of cryptocurrency coding

Taylor is partnered and has advised that they and their partner jointly purchased 3 Ethereum (ETH) at 12pm on 21 November 2025. The value obtained for Ethereum (ETH) on 21 November was $4,429.14. This means the total value of Taylor's and their partner’s Ethereum is $13,287.42.

Market value x no of crypto holdings = asset value

$4,429.14 x 3 = $13,287.42

Their Ethereum (ETH) is recorded on the OAS screen as follows:

  • Asset Type: Other assets (OTH)
  • Description: Crypto - Ethereum (ETH)
  • Event Date: 21 November 2025
  • Total Asset Value: $13,287 (rounded down to the nearest whole dollar)
  • % Owned Client: 50%
  • % Owned Partner: 50%

Taylor and their partner’s assets will also need to be updated to reflect where the funds to purchase the cryptocurrency came from.

Example of cryptocurrency received as valuable consideration from employment

Over the Christmas period, Andy is employed by their local shopping centre and works as a Santa Claus. Instead of receiving money in return for their work, Andy is rewarded with cryptocurrency.

The cryptocurrency is treated as valuable consideration and assessed as employment income because it has been received as part of an employee/employer relationship.

The value of the cryptocurrency given at the time of payment is assessed from the start date of the entitlement period it is received in for a period of time equivalent to the period of work performed.

Andy’s assets (OAS) will also need to be updated to reflect the cryptocurrency they own.

3

Example of cryptocurrency received as valuable consideration (non-employment)

Riley decides to stake their existing Tether (USDT) to grow their cryptocurrency portfolio, and they are rewarded with more Tether (USDT) from staking.

The value of the additional cryptocurrency rewarded at the time of payment is treated as valuable consideration and assessed as ordinary income (OINS).

Riley’s assets (OAS) will also need to be updated to reflect the increase in their cryptocurrency holdings.
