This document outlines what happens when parents or guardians of ABSTUDY customers who are subject to the parental income test, commence or return to work.

Parental income test

The following ABSTUDY customers are subject to a parental income test:

  • dependent students and Australian Apprentices under 16 who are eligible for the Away from Home Rate (AFH)
  • all dependent students and Australian Apprentices 16 or over

Income

The parental income test is based on the income of the relevant parents/guardians irrespective of whether the ABSTUDY customer lives at home or away from home.

Assessing and coding parental income for ABSTUDY, Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) Scheme and Youth Allowance (YA)

Increase or decrease in parental income for Youth Allowance (YA), ABSTUDY and Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) Scheme
