4

Reason for ending assessment + Read more ...

Common reasons:

  • Reconciled or started living with the other parent
  • The customer no longer believes the paying parent is a parent of the child
  • There is a private arrangement for collecting child support made and the customer no longer needs Child Support to calculate the amount of child support payable

Child Support can end an assessment without a request from the payee if the child leaves care or the child or the payer dies.

If the customer receives Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A at more than the base rate, the customer can only end an assessment in some cases. See Effect on Family Tax Benefit (FTB) where the customer elects to suspend or end a child support assessment.

5

End date and child support arrears + Read more ...

The customer can:

  • ask Child Support to work out the date to end the assessment so that there is no child support overpayment or underpayment, or
  • choose their own date

If the customer selects the date, they must indicate if they want Child Support to collect any child support owed to them.

If the customer wants Child Support to collect any arrears, the customer can ask for the full amount to be collected or indicate a lesser amount.

Note: if an individual opts to change from Child Support collect to private collect, they can elect to collect any arrears of child support owing to them. This has the effect of discharging Child Support from the responsibility for collecting the arrears. Instead, the individual is responsible for collecting the arrears, this needs to be recorded as child support income. The discharged arrears amount is not included in the entitlement data from Child Support therefore the discharged amount will need to be added to the Child Support assessed amount and manually coded as the total actual amount. For details, see Recording private maintenance income. The customer may ask Child Support to continue to collect these arrears.
