Cessation of the ABSTUDY Away from Home rate 010-02070150

Example of a student continuing to meet the Away from Home criteria

Table 1

Example

Scenario

1

Family and secondary student temporarily moves to another home location

John is from Badu Island and currently boards at boarding school in Brisbane.

John's family have moved to Brisbane to support a parent having specialist medical treatment.

John transitions to a day student and lives with their family while they are temporarily living in Brisbane.

For John to remain eligible for the Away from Home rate, the family must intend to return to the permanent home, and evidence for the purpose of the temporary home may be required to support the students move into the temporary location.

The Away from Home eligibility would cease when the family no longer intend to return to the original family location. The exception would be for a secondary school student where continuity of study provisions exist.

Example

Scenario

1

Secondary student who ceases early in term 4

Alexis is from Lord Howe Island NSW and currently attends a boarding school in Sydney.

Alexis withdraws early from school in term 4.

For Alexis to be paid ABSTUDY until the end of the term entitlement period (31 December for term 4), Alexis must have completed all course work for the term.

As Alexis is deemed not to have completed the course work for the term, Alexis is only entitled to ABSTUDY until the date of discontinuation.
