Example 1

On 16 October 2023 Tim reports zero income for the reporting period 3 October to 16 October. Tim advises Services Australia that his last day working with his apprentice employer was 29 September 2023. Tim also advises he will continue his apprentice with a new employer and expects to start on 23 October 2023.

On Tim’s next reporting day, 30 October 2023, he reports zero income again. Tim advises he did commence as expected on 23 October but has not been paid for his first week of work. On 13 November 2023 Tim reports the income he has received for his new apprentice employer.

Tim remains eligible for Youth Allowance while he transitions from one apprentice employer to the other, as the gap was within 28 days and his Commonwealth Registration Number remained current.

Example 2

On 17 November 2023 Jackie advises Services Australia that she finished working with her apprentice employer on 1 November 2023. Jackie also advises she hopes to continue her apprenticeship with another employer as soon as possible. Jackie has applied for several jobs with apprentice employers.

Jackie reports zero income on her next reporting day which is 1 December 2023. Jackie advises Services Australia that she has not been able to gain employment with a new apprentice employer.

Jackie is entitled to receive Youth Allowance as an apprentice up until 1 December 2023 because:

  • she intends to continue her apprenticeship within 28 days of ceasing work with her previous employer, and
  • her Commonwealth Registration Number is current

Jackie’s Youth Allowance is cancelled and advised to make a claim for a more suitable payment.
