Examples - Commencement following year 12 completion

Table 1

Item

Description

1

Student completes year 12 or equivalent study in the same year they commence their tertiary studies

Cathy is 19 and has completed the equivalent of year 12 studies at the end of Semester 1 2022.

Cathy enrolled in a TAP approved course commencing in Semester 2 2022. Cathy subsequently lodges a TAP online claim in July 2022.

Cathy is eligible for TAP, having:

  • commenced a tertiary course within 12 months immediately following completion of year 12 or equivalent, and
  • met all other eligibility criteria

2

Student completes year 12 or equivalent study in a different year from commencing their tertiary studies

Deb is 20 and has completed the equivalent of year 12 studies at the end of Semester 1 2021.

Deb enrolled in a TAP approved course commencing in Semester 1 2022. Deb subsequently lodges a TAP online claim in January 2022.

Deb is eligible for TAP, having:

  • commenced a tertiary course within 12 months immediately following completion of year 12 or equivalent, and
  • has met all other eligibility criteria

3

Student successfully completes year 12 twice

Nichole is 19 and will commence a TAP approved course in Semester 1 2022. Nichole lodges a TAP claim in January 2022.

In the TAP claim lodged, Nichole states:

  • successful completion of year 12 at secondary school at the end of Semester 2 2020, as well as
  • successful completion of the equivalent of year 12 studies at TAFE at the end of Semester 2 2021

Nichole is not eligible for TAP. Nichole is assessed on the first successful completion of year 12. In this instance this would be Nichole's secondary school studies completed at the end of Semester 2 2020.

4

Student has completed year 13 study

Coen is 19 and has lodged a TAP claim in January 2023 for a TAP approved course commencing Semester 1 2023.

Coen successfully completed Year 13 in a Tasmanian Government School at the end of Semester 2 2022.

Coen did not successfully complete Year 12 in 2021, however Year 13 study meets the requirements as an equivalent of a Year 12 course.

Coen is eligible for TAP, having commenced tertiary study within 12 months immediately following the first successful completion of a Year 12 equivalent course.

5

Student completed Year 12

Student commenced study semester 1 in the calendar year following completion of year 12 with a 0.125 Equivalent Full-time Student Load (EFTSL) study load. Student relocates in semester 2 to commence full time study load of 0.500 Equivalent Full-time Student Load (EFTSL). The students study load is 0.625 Equivalent Full-time Student Load (EFTSL) for the first year of tertiary study. As the student does not meet the minimum 75 per cent full-time study load requirements over the 12 months from the date of commencement of their course, they are not eligible for TAP.

6

VET studies undertaken concurrently with secondary education

Gloria lodged a claim for TAP in January 2024 for a Bachelor of Arts course commenced in February 2024.

In 2022, Gloria was studying Year 11 at a secondary school and a Certificate III in Dance at a Registered Training Organisation. Gloria was awarded a Certificate III qualification in July 2022.

In 2023, Gloria was studying Year 12 at a secondary school which they completed in November 2023.

Although Gloria's Certificate III course is regarded as Year 12 equivalent studies, because it was undertaken concurrently with Gloria's secondary studies, it is to be disregarded when determining whether Gloria has claimed TAP or commenced tertiary study in an appropriate timeframe.

Gloria has met the:

  • Course commencement requirement by starting a tertiary course within the 12 months following November 2023 (the date they completed Year 12)
  • Application Period requirement by lodging a claim for TAP between 1 January and 31 December in the year they commence their tertiary course

7

Student relocating for study - ineligible

In Semester 1, 2023, Sam commenced study in a Bachelor of Communications. Sam lodged a claim for TAP after relocating on 23 December 2023.

Sam’s first year of study lapsed on 30 November 2023 when Semester 2 concluded.

As Sam relocated after they completed one academic year of study in their course, Sam is not eligible for TAP.

The relocation was not required for Sam to engage in their first year of tertiary study because it happened after the end of the study period.

Note: had Sam commenced study in Semester 2, 2023, the first year of Sam’s course would not have lapsed until the end of Semester 1, 2024.

8

Student relocating for study - eligible

In Semester 2, 2023, Ali commenced a Bachelor of Science. Ali lodged a claim for TAP on 30 December 2023 after relocating on 20 December 2023.

Ali’s first year of study will lapse in June 2024 when Semester 1 concludes.

As Ali has relocated before they have completed one academic year of study in their course, they meet the relocation criteria for TAP.
