This document outlines information about the psychologist consultation service and the referral process for forensic matters.

Consultation services

The Assessment Services Branch has established a consultation service to provide professional advice and support for Services Australia staff working with customers who have behavioural issues that may require an enhanced level of support.

These psychologists are highly professional and experienced consultants who have specialist knowledge in the practice of psychology working in a range of forensic settings. These include correctional facilities, the police service or in community corrections where they utilise their clinical skills in understanding human behaviours.

Behavioural issues that the psychologists provide include:

  • advice on managing customers who are:
    • aggressive or vexatious
    • threatening suicide or homicide intent
  • psychological education and support for Services Australia staff working with difficult customers
  • group training for Services Australia staff to build resilience, set professional boundaries, understand specific mental health and substance misuse issues and how these may impact on customer and staff behaviour, and
  • advice about community corrections involvement in the management of customers
