This document explains the Agreement including the process of making a claim for Australian payment under the Agreement and coding of Spanish payments.

Start date

The Agreement with Spain started on 3 June 1991 and was fully revised on 1 January 2003.

Claiming and benefits covered

The Agreement generally allows customers to lodge a claim for payment from either country. It also allows customers to add together periods of residence in Australia and periods of social security coverage in Spain, to meet the minimum requirements for payment.

Australian payments covered:

  • Age Pension
  • Disability Support Pension (DSP) for the severely disabled
  • Carer Payment
  • Parenting Payment Single (PPS)

Note: Carer partners of Age Pension or DSP in Spain only

  • Double Orphan Pension (DOP)

Note: only 'widowed persons' can be granted PPS.

Customers can claim for Australian payments under International Agreements by contacting the Services Australia or the Spanish authorities.

Spanish payments covered:

  • Retirement Pension
  • Permanent/temporary incapacity
  • Survivor Pension
  • Death grant
  • Family Benefits
  • Unemployment Benefit
  • Benefits for maternity or risk during pregnancy

Customers can claim a foreign pension by contacting the Services Australia or the Spanish authorities.
