Contacting an on-demand Auslan interpreter via video chat for customers who are deaf or hard of hearing 005-25041618

This document explains how customers who are deaf or hard of hearing use video chat to access on-demand Auslan interpreters at selected service centres.

Overview

To ensure customers who are deaf or hard of hearing receive equal and accessible services, selected service centres offer on-demand Auslan interpreters via video chat for customers without an appointment.

Auslan interpreters

Auslan is the official and most commonly used sign language of the Australian deaf or hard of hearing community. It is also known as Australian sign language.

Interpreters use gestures instead of sounds to help customers who are deaf or hard of hearing communicate easily. They convert spoken language into sign language and vice versa.

Services Australia prefers the use of qualified interpreters.

Customers can access free Auslan interpreters in person or via video chat at selected service centres.

The Resources page contains links to contact details, forms and a list of services centres that offer video chat.
