Example of Australian Apprentices 28 day rule for change of employer

Australian Apprentices 28 day rule for changing employers

Example

Jackie gets Youth Allowance as an apprentice. On 17 November 2023 Jackie reports nil employment income online. The report fails as she is an apprentice and is expected to have income. She is advised to contact.

Jackie tells Services Australia she stopped working with her apprentice employer on 1 November 2023. Jackie also hopes to continue her apprenticeship with another employer as soon as possible and has applied for a number of jobs with apprentice employers.

Jackie reports nil income again on her next reporting day which is 1 December 2023. Jackie tells the agency that she has not been able to get employment with a new apprentice employer.

As Jackie intended to continue her apprenticeship within 28 days of ceasing work with her previous employer, and her Commonwealth Registration Number is current, she is entitled to receive Youth Allowance as an apprentice up until 1 December 2023.

Jackie is under 22, and actively looking for work. As she has contacted in the entitlement period after the allowable 28 day period has passed, she can be registered as a jobseeker and remain on Youth Allowance.

If Jackie did not contact in the entitlement period after the allowable 28 day period, her Youth Allowance would be cancelled as of 1 December 2023. Jackie would need to lodge a new claim.
