This document outlines information about the Agreement including the process of making a claim for Australian payment under the Agreement and coding of Belgian payments.

Start date

The Agreement with Belgium started on 1 July 2005.

Claiming and benefits covered

The Belgian Agreement allows customers to lodge a claim for payment from either country. It also allows customers to add together periods of residence in Australia and periods of social security coverage in Belgium, to meet the minimum requirements for payment.

Australian payments covered:

  • Age Pension
  • Disability Support Pension (DSP)

Note: ‘severely disabled’ for DSP portability transfer purposes only. DSP payment cannot be claimed.

Customers can claim Australian payments under the Agreement by contacting Services Australia or the Belgian authorities.

Belgian payments covered:

  • Retirement Pension
  • Invalidity Pension - only a person who became disabled while subject to the Belgian legislation can apply for an Invalidity pension
  • Survivor Pension

Note: only a person who became disabled while subject to the Belgian legislation can apply for an Invalidity pension.

Customers can claim a foreign pension by contacting Services Australia or the Belgian authorities.
