This document explains customer identity for Medicare.

Identity

A customer’s identity is comprised of a combination of characteristics or features that uniquely distinguishes them from others.

Identity verification is essential because it:

  • makes sure entitlements and services are provided to the correct person
  • protects customers from having their information obtained or altered by unauthorised persons
  • minimises the risk to the agency from identity crime and other fraud
