This document outlines how to deal with stale cheques issued from Australian Child Support.
Stale and unpresented cheques
A cheque is 'stale' if it has exceeded the timeframe within which the bank in its country of issue will still honour it. That is, the time between the date of issue and the date presented for payment.
Timeframes vary between countries.
Some of the more common countries and their timeframes are:
- CAD: 6 Months
- EUR: 20 Days (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and Spain)
- EUR: 6 Months (Greece, Ireland and Portugal)
- GBP: 6 Months
- JPY: 8 Months
- PHP: 6 Months
- TRY: 3 Months
- USD: 6 Months
- ZAR: 6 Months
The International Disbursement Officers action the quarterly Unpresented Cheque status report.
Only authorised officers perform this process.
