Special career interest

Wes is a secondary year 12 student living in rural NSW. Wes has elected to study at a secondary school other than the local secondary school as the school is offering a tertiary agricultural studies component as part of the year 12 curriculum. Wes advises this will enhance future employability in the agricultural field. Supporting documentation has been provided in the form of statements from Wes's school principal and teachers. Wes's preferred place of study is more than 90 minutes from the home address.

Wes is eligible to bypass the local secondary school and qualify for the away from home rate of YA as the curriculum available at the non-local school would enhance Wes's employability.

Special talent

May is a gifted dancer who lives in Canberra. The local secondary does not provide facilities or an educational focus for dance. May wishes to bypass the local secondary school in order to attend the Victorian School of Ballet. May's school principal, teachers and members of the arts community (who have connections with the school) have provided statements identifying attendance at the non-local school will be beneficial in the development of May's special talent.

May would be eligible to bypass the local secondary school as has demonstrated it is beneficial to education and/or employment prospects. As May would have to move to another state to attend, May would qualify for the away from home rate of YA.
