Calculation

Calculation of gap amount for Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN) threshold

Frank goes to the doctor and the doctor charges $150 for the service provided. In this example, the MBS schedule fee for the MBS item is $100.

The standard Medicare benefit for out-of-hospital services is 85% of the schedule fee. To calculate the gap amount:

  • Gap amount = MBS item schedule fee minus the Medicare benefit paid:
    • $100 - $85
    • = $15

The $15 gap amount contributes towards reaching Frank's OMSN threshold.

Calculation of out of pocket (OOP) expense for the EMSN threshold.

Using the details from the above example, the OOP is calculated as follows:

  • OOP = Doctor's fee minus Medicare benefit paid:
    • $150 - $85
    • = $65

Frank's $65 OOP expense contributes towards reaching the EMSN threshold.
