Government intent

Assistance for Isolated children (AIC) assists families of students who cannot attend an appropriate state school daily due to geographical isolation. AIC offers financial support to help cover extra education costs for these families.

Assistance for applicants

Applicants may receive AIC for eligible students undertaking primary, secondary or tertiary level studies who cannot attend an appropriate state school due to:

  • geographical isolation
  • disability
  • special needs

A range of allowances is available for students who are:

  • boarding away from home
  • living in a second family home that provides daily access to the educational provider, or
  • undertaking approved distance education study

Taxation and means testing

AIC is a non-taxable payment.

Except for Additional Boarding Allowance (ABA), AIC payments are not means tested.
