Employment assistance for trainees 001-02310000

This document provides information about trainees who register as job seekers.

Trainee is a job seeker

A trainee, other than an Australian Apprentice (apprentice or trainee), is considered to be a job seeker and may qualify for JobSeeker Payment (JSP) or Youth Allowance (YA) (job seeker) provided they meet all the relevant qualification and payability criteria.

Approved Study

Trainees may have their study approved by their Employment Services Provider as an approved activity that satisfies their mutual obligation requirements. The approved activity may be:

  • Specific to the study - Skills for Education and Employment (SEE), and Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). Trainees may contact Services Australia on 132 850 or their nearest service centre to find out more about these programs or
  • General short course study - Employment Services Providers have the primary role in the approval of short courses of full-time study for job seekers that are provider managed. For more information see Part-time or full-time study as an approved activity for JobSeeker Payment (JSP)

Not an approved part-time course

Customers who are undertaking a part-time course that is not an approved course under the Ministerial Determination of Education Institutions and Courses are not required to seek approval from Services Australia to undertake this study. If the job seeker is provider managed, the Employment Services Provider will determine the activities the job seeker is required to undertake to meet their mutual obligation requirements.
