This document outlines how to assess the principal carers large family, foster carer, home schooling, distance education or carer non-parent exemption review.

Exemption review

Circumstances of a principal carer for dependent child/ren are looked at the end of an exemption period for mutual obligation requirements, for one of the following reasons:

  • large family - 4 or more dependent children
  • registered and active foster carer
  • providing home schooling - Note: if the eligibility criteria are met, parents/guardians providing home schooling to their children may be eligible to apply for Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC)
  • children are undertaking distance education
  • relative (not a parent) caring for a child at the direction of a Parenting Order, or
  • family or community member (not a parent) caring for a child under a formal State/Territory protection case plan

Exemption end date reviews

Principal carers large family, foster carer, home schooling, distance education or carer non-parent exemption reviews are conducted via:

  • an online task sent to the job seeker's online account, or
  • request to contact letter for those not registered for self-service

The review is triggered 28 days before the end date of the exemption coded on the Activity and Exemptions Summary (AEX) screen.

Remote job seekers are serviced using alternative arrangements managed by the relevant Service Zone in conjunction with the Remote Servicing Team, where possible.
