This document outlines how to assess the principal carers large family, foster carer, home schooling, distance education or carer non-parent exemption review.
Exemption review
Circumstances of a principal carer for dependent child/ren are looked at the end of an exemption period for mutual obligation requirements, for one of the following reasons:
- large family - four or more dependent children, or
- registered and active foster carer, or
- providing home schooling - Note: if the eligibility criteria are met, parents/guardians providing home schooling to their children may be eligible to apply for the Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) Scheme, or
- children are undertaking distance education, or
- relative (not a parent) caring for a child at the direction of a Parenting Order, or
- family or community member (not a parent) caring for a child under a formal State/Territory protection case plan
Changes from 1 July 2021
From 1 July 2021, Principal carers large family, foster carer, home schooling, distance education or carer non-parent exemption reviews were replaced by online tasks or request to contact letters for those not signed up for self-service 28 days from the expiry of the exemption on the Activity and Exemption Summary (AEX) screen. These changes do not affect Remote Customers who will continue to be serviced as per current arrangements.
Note: during a transition period, appointments booked on or after the 1 July 2021 by the service profiler will still need to be conducted (this includes rescheduling if required).
