This document outlines the notification provisions when Pensioner Education Supplement (PES), ABSTUDY PES and Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) PES customers have a change in circumstances.
Notification obligations
PES, ABSTUDY PES and AIC PES customers are obliged to advise Services Australia, usually within 14 days, of any event or change in circumstances that could affect their payment.
Notifiable events
Customer's obligations and notifiable events are listed on the back of their Centrelink letters.
Following is a list of the types of changes a customer must advise. As circumstances vary for each customer, this list is not exhaustive.
Changes of circumstance that may require review or update to a customer's record include, any changes:
- to income or assets, including commencing employment
- to study, including temporary cessation due to incapacity
- of contact details including changes to address and/or telephone number
- to accommodation details, including changes to address and rent
- to relationship status
- to residency status.
Consequences of failure to notify
If PES, ABSTUDY PES and AIC PES customers fail to notify the agency of a change in circumstance they may continue to receive an incorrect rate of payment or a loss of entitlement. The incorrect rate of entitlement may result in an underpayment or overpayment.
Checking and updating contact details
Staff must check at every contact and update if required, every customers:
- address (including postal address), and
- telephone details (including mobile phone numbers)
Note: if the customer has authenticated themselves via IVR or online, address details do not need to be confirmed.
