Government intent
Youth Allowance provides financial help for young people aged between 16 and 24 years who are undertaking approved studies, training or planning to undertake approved studies or training. It is for Australian residents and the young person must be in Australia on the day the claim is lodged.
Eligibility for Youth Allowance (YA)
Eligibility for YA based on the following:
- the age of the student
- whether they are doing an approved course or activity
- whether they are dependent or independent
- the income and assets tests, and
- residence requirements
Age and approved courses or activity
Youth Allowance (YA) may be available to customers:
- between 16 and 21 years who are looking for full-time work or undertaking approved activities
- between 18 and 24 years and studying full-time
- between 16 and 17 years who have completed year 12 or equivalent, need to live away from home in order to study, or are considered independent for Youth Allowance
- between 16 and 24 years who are undertaking a full-time Australian Apprenticeship
