Eligibility for student payments when enrolled in Open Universities Australia 010-07010130

Identifying the related degrees for individual units of study

Service Officers can search the OUA website to determine whether the units they are enrolled in are contributing to the same course/qualification.

From the home page, use the search function to search for the subject code (available on the statement of enrolment). The subject code for Introduction to Legal Studies at the University of New England is UNE-LSU100. See Open Universities Partner and Codes.

For example, when using the code UNE-LSU100 in the search function, the results indicated (at the time of the search), the subject was linked to 16 degrees.

Determining the workload of students studying in more than one study period and if units of enrolment are for a single course

Description

How to calculate the aggregated workload of a student studying more than one study period

Ben has nominated they are studying a Bachelor of Business with OUA. A check of the OUA handbook indicates that this course is being offered under the following partner Universities, see Open Universities Partner and Codes:

  • Griffith University (GRF-BUS-DEG)
  • Swinburne University (SWI-BUS-DEG)
  • University of Tasmania (TAS-BUS-DEG)

Ben advised the course code is GRF-BUS-DEG i.e. Griffith University

Even though the course may be awarded by partner Griffith University, the Institution: field code for OUA, 3A999 must be recorded on the Education screen and the definition of full time is determined under OUA.

Statement of Enrolment for 2021 shows:

  • Subject Code: GRF-AFE112-2021
    • Status: Enrolled
    • Subject Start Date: 1/03/21
    • Subject End Date: 30/5/21
    • Subject EFTSL: 0.125
  • Subject Code: USA-ECO11-2021
    • Status: Enrolled
    • Subject Start Date: 28/3/21
    • Subject End Date: 11/6/21
    • Subject EFTSL: 0.125

The OUA handbook indicates both of the above subjects form part of the single Bachelor of Business that Ben has 'nominated' so we are able to determine the workload of both units toward this award.

As the Subject Start and End dates differ, we may need to make an Aggregation of study load assessment.

The National Course Approvals sub-site indicates that OUA define 0.250 EFTSL as full time over a 13 week (91 day period).

The combined aggregated duration of the 2 study periods, 1 March to 11 June 2021 is a period of 103 days.

Full time workload calculation for OUA for a 91 day period:

  • 100% = 0.250 EFTSL
  • 75% = 0.1875 EFFSL
  • 50% = 0.125 EFTSL
  • 25% = 0.0625 EFTSL

Ben has a workload of 0.250 EFTSL over a 103 day period.

Workload calculation:

0.250 x 91 days divided by 103 days = 0.2208737

Ben's aggregated workload (0.2208737/0.250) is over 75% of the normal full time workload. Ben would be considered full time from 1 March to 11 June 2021.

2

How to determine the study load of a student studying more than one study period

Naomi advised they are studying a Bachelor of Arts with OUA. A check of the OUA handbook indicates this course is offered under the following partner Universities:

  • Griffith University (GRF-ART-DEG)
  • Macquarie University (MAQ-ART-DEG)

Naomi advised the course code is MAQ-ART-DEG i.e. Macquarie University.

Even though the course may be awarded by partner Macquarie University, the Institution: field code for OUA, 3A999 must be recorded on the Education screen and the definition of full time is determined under OUA.

Statement of Enrolment for 2021 shows:

  • Subject Code: MAQ-ENGX2033-2021
    • Status: Enrolled
    • Subject Start Date: 26/7/21
    • Subject End Date: 5/11/21
    • Subject EFTSL: 0.125
  • Subject Code: CUR-PWP110-2021
    • Status: Enrolled
    • Subject Start Date: 30/8/21
    • Subject End Date: 28/11/21
    • Subject EFTSL: 0.125

To qualify for a Bachelor of Arts degree through OUA under partner Macquarie University, students must complete 24 subjects of study, 16 of which must be Macquarie subjects. 8 subjects can be included from other OUA partner Institutions that offer Bachelor of Arts awards.

The CUR-PWP110-2021 subject is offered with OUA partner Curtin University. The OUA handbook indicates that this subject forms a part of another Bachelor of Arts course, the Bachelor of Arts (Creative Writing) course with Curtin University.

The OUA handbook indicates both of the above subjects may form a part of the single Bachelor of Arts that Naomi has 'nominated' as her course award of study so we are able to determine the workload of both units toward the award this award.

As the Subject Start and End dates differ, we may need to make an Aggregation of study load assessment.

The National Course Approvals sub-site indicates that OUA define 0.250 EFTSL as full time over a 13 week (91 day period) or 0.5 EFTSL over an aggregated half-year period.

The combined aggregated duration of the 2 study periods, 26 July to 28 November 2021 is a period of 126 days. An aggregated half-year assessment may also be considered.

Full time workload calculation for OUA for a 91 day period or 0.5 EFTSL over a half-year period:

  • 100% = 0.250 EFTSL
  • 75% = 0.1875 EFFSL
  • 50% = 0.125 EFTSL
  • 25% = 0.0625 EFTSL

Half-year aggregated period:

  • 100% = 0.5 EFTSL
  • 75% = 0.375 EFTSL
  • 50% = 0.250 EFTSL
  • 25% = 0.125 EFTSL

Naomi has a workload of 0.250 EFTSL over a 126 day period or 0.250 EFTSL over a half-year period.

Workload calculation:

0.250 x 91 days divided by 126 days = 0.1805555

Naomi's aggregated workload (0.1805555/0.250) is under 75% of the normal full time workload. Naomi would be considered part time from 26 July to 28 November 2021.

Normal and concession study loads

The normal study load for an OUA study period at university level is only 2 units (for courses offered over 4 standard study periods per year), which leaves little scope for concessional study loads.

Units and the percentage of study period workload

Table 3: This table describes how units would count towards this type of study period full-time workload.

Type of unit

Percentage of study period workload

A single unit

50%

A double unit completed in one study period

100%

A student will usually be considered as full-time if they are undertaking at least 75% of the full-time workload.

Note: whilst some students may undertake more than one study period or session, many do not undertake their entire course at Open Universities Australia and a significant number only do one study period or session. It is important to only code study details for one study period or session at a time in these cases to avoid customers getting overpayments. However, if a customer provides proof of enrolling in more than one study period or session, code the full period of enrolment.
