Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) transfers to and from another payment 010-03020100

This document outlines when it may be beneficial for a family to claim AIC for a student rather than for the student to continue receiving another payment.

AIC claims

AIC claims and forms are processed by AIC smart centre staff. If a student wishes to transfer from another payment to AIC, the parent/guardian will need to complete a Claim for Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC) (SY040). Claims should be lodged by 1 March in the year following that for which assistance is sought. See Claiming Assistance for Isolated Children (AIC).

Claiming alternative payments

If the family decides it is more beneficial for the student to claim ABSTUDY, Youth Allowance (YA) or Disability Support Pension (DSP), the appropriate claim must be completed. AIC students may also transfer to a non-Services Australia educational assistance scheme such as the Veterans' Children Education Scheme (VCES).

Ceasing study

If an AIC student ceases studying and they wish to continue to receive assistance, they will need to claim Youth Allowance (YA) as a job seeker or claim YA or ABSTUDY as an Australian Apprentice.

If the AIC student is no longer studying, but has a physical, intellectual or psychiatric impairment, they may be qualified to receive DSP.
