ABSTUDY Fares Allowance (FAA) 010-02100000
This document explains Fares Allowance (FAA) for ABSTUDY. It is paid to cover the cost of specific travel for students who need to live away from home to attend study or to participate in an approved Away from Base activity.
Eligibility
To qualify for Fares Allowance for all types of specified travel, with the exception of Away from Base activities travel, the following criteria must be met:
- the student meets the criteria for one of the following ABSTUDY Awards:
- Schooling B Award or
- Tertiary Award or
- Masters and Doctorate Award and
- the student has a permanent home address that varies from their term address and
- the travelling time and/or distance between the permanent home and the term address can be considered to be unreasonable and
- the journey is not precluded under the interstate travel rules and
- the person undertaking the journey is an approved traveller and
- the student is eligible for the type of specified travel being undertaken
Australian Apprentices are not entitled to FAA.
Claiming
Customers can claim for FAA before and after travel. The Resources page shows how a customer can lodge a claim.
Customers may claim for the following travel:
- Travel at commencement and end of study period
- Tertiary or secondary non-schooling semester travel
- School vacation travel
- Compassionate travel
- Away from Base travel
- Examination travel
- Graduation travel
- Masters and Doctorate travel for ABSTUDY
- Orientation Visit travel
- Special Purpose Visit travel
- Emergency and disaster travel
Note: some restrictions apply to eligibility for assistance to travel interstate.
Rate
FAA rate is based on the most practicable and cost effective for the journey between the permanent home and the study location.
Travel to another destination other than the permanent home or usual study location can be available in certain circumstances. See Determining the appropriate travel destination for ABSTUDY Fares Allowance (FAA).
